An access-control reader collects a credential and communicates with the controller or supported management architecture. Selecting one requires more than matching its appearance to a door. Check credential technology, secure configuration, interface, environment, mounting and the user’s entry workflow.
Separate credential technology from the reader interface
The card or phone-to-reader exchange is different from the reader-to-controller connection. A reader may support several credential technologies, but enabling a legacy mode can change the security of the intended deployment. Record the exact supported credential, key-management arrangement, interface and enabled configuration.
OSDP provides supervised bidirectional reader communication and supports Secure Channel. Verify that the controller and reader support the intended mode and that it is actually enabled. See the Security Industry Association’s OSDP documentation.
Compare reader approaches
| Approach | Planning value | Checks |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless card/fob | Dedicated credential with a familiar entry workflow. | Technology, cryptographic configuration, issuance and revocation. |
| Mobile credential | Credential managed through a supported phone ecosystem. | Phone support, provisioning, offline use, replacement, battery and recurring charges. |
| Keypad | Code entry alone or with another factor where supported. | Shared-code risks, individual accountability, retries and privacy at the opening. |
| Biometric reader | Authentication using an enrolled biometric characteristic. | Accuracy, privacy, retention, alternative access and supported integration. |
| Long-range reader | Vehicle or other distance-based credential workflows. | Read zone, unintended reads, credential placement and separate gate safety. |
Manufacturer examples
HID’s reader and credential ecosystem is discussed in the HID and Mercury profile. Farpointe’s Conekt documentation describes mobile-ready reader options with model-specific interfaces. Alcatraz’s Rock X documentation describes a biometric approach. These are different product categories, not interchangeable feature packages.
Survey the installation
Check mounting surface, accessible use, approach direction, weather exposure, impact protection, cable route, supply voltage and distance. Define the indicator and sound behavior so users understand accepted, denied and unavailable states. At paired doors or vehicle lanes, confirm which opening or lane the credential controls.
Commission the complete workflow
- Test every approved credential type and denied or expired credentials.
- Confirm the secure reader configuration and communication-fault reporting.
- Verify the correct door releases and the event identifies the correct opening.
- Test revocation, mobile replacement and applicable offline behavior.
- Check usability, environmental conditions and fallback procedures.
